Next Generation FEC for SD-WAN
Scalable and dynamic FEC software solutions today
for networks and connected devices of tomorrow
Typical Use Cases for SD-WAN Customers
Steinwurf’s FEC solutions can help SD-WAN providers deliver the next generation of performance to their customers using all manner of cloud business solutions.
Using RLNC to Supercharge SD-WAN
SD-WAN companies face new and complex network challenges and Steinwurf’s RLNC-powered FEC solutions are designed to help SD-WAN providers to meet these challenges by:
Replacing expensive MPLS solutions and add further reliability with Steinwurf’s flexible, latency optimising FEC solutions
Reducing bandwidth costs by using existing links more efficiently, reducing retransmissions and latency spikes
Leveraging bandwidth savings to increase the userbase using the same infrastructure, or serve more applications down the same pipeline without affecting QoE
Eliminating retransmissions using only a minimum amount of correction overhead in the networking equipment
Optimise Latency, Reliability and Overhead with Steinwurf’s Solutions
Steinwurf’s FEC solutions help optimise all the core KPIs to make sure SD-Wan providers can deliver a great QoE at much lower cost. Legacy FECs force trade-offs where RLNC / Steinwurf’s FEC does not make you choose:
Steinwurf’s FEC can overcome the trade-off dilemma between reliability; latency; and efficient use of bandwidth (overhead)
We can be faster, better, and cheaper than any other solution in the market with:
Unbeatable Latency - to ensure VoIP, video calls, financial transactions are running at top speed without any delay.
Lower Overhead - keeping bandwidth and hardware usage to a minimum so costs don’t skyrocket.
Higher Reliability - to ensure smoother application performance and long-term customer satisfaction.
Not all FECs are created equal
When comparing other FECs to Steinwurf’s RLNC powered solutions, Steinwurf’s solutions are always steps ahead of any competition
Steinwurf’s FEC’s are extremely flexible and tuneable so, whatever your unique priorities may be, we can help you with an FEC solution that achieves your goals without compromising any of your KPIs

Improving latency and performance in Barracuda’s Cloud Gen SD-WAN solution
Barracuda Networks tested Steinwurf’s software in their Cloud Gen SD-WAN solution to improve latency and performance in the presence of network impairments and went on to integrate the product shortly afterwards.
“Steinwurf’s software libraries made it very easy to get started and test out their FEC solution in our SD-WAN products. It was straightforward to translate the solution into our framework and their high-quality code and top-notch technical support made it a pleasure to work with both Steinwurf and their software.”

FAQs
What does Steinwurf’s FEC do and how does it perform based on CPU and memory utilization?
In general the performance of ECC/FEC algorithms depends greatly on a few key parameters e.g. - how many packets you include in each repair packet. Also, ECC/FEC algorithms perform calculations in something called a finite field. Which can be quite slow - unless you have hardware acceleration enabled. All our algorithms are optimized using SIMD acceleration on both ARM and x86, so in many cases CPU and memory utilisation of our FEC is imperceptible. In general we can "tune" the parameters to match a specific target. In particular with a RLNC based FEC/ECC algorithm such as ours we have a lot of flexibility on that side.
What is the target packet loss range where it makes sense to use Steinwurf’s FEC?
There really isn't any upper bound on the amount of packet loss that can be fixed using Steinwurf’s FEC. The repair rate can be adjusted on the fly - which is recommended to get the best bandwidth and reliability trade-off. However, in general if links are very broken (very bursty losses) it may not be feasible to fix with an ECC/FEC algorithm. In our experience, many typical deployments aim to fix between 0-5% or 0-10% packet loss while maintaining a latency target. If you have any non standard requirements, we can recommend the best approach to achieve your goals after an initial call.
How does the integration process work for Steinwurf’s FEC?
The following link in the Rely documentation gives a broad outline of the integration process for Rely: https://rely.steinwurf.com/docs/latest/integrating_rely.html. For our other products get in touch at contact@steinwurf.com and we can go through your options and recommend the most appropriate approach.
How long does the evaluation process take?
We offer a 3 month free evaluation period. In our experience it takes only a few weeks to get up and running and perform the necessary testing to understand the significant performance gains you can expect.
